Volunteer & Make A Difference at Murdock!
Our goal is to find a way for you to volunteer
in a way that will fit within your busy life.
Shows our students that adults value education and are willing to donate their time and talents.
When you add together the number of minutes that every person volunteers, Murdock school benefits from more than 10,000 volunteer hours per year! What an amazing message for children.

Want to help? It's simple!
Download and fill out the Volunteer form and email to Kathy Haase.
It can be intimidating to volunteer when you're not sure "how things work" at a school. The PTA is here to help answer your questions. We want you to find a way to serve that fits your schedule and your skill set!
There are an array of ways adults can serve. STUDENTS BENEFIT from your time and talent, inside and outside the classroom, during and before/after school hours. |
- Look for the Volunteer Opportunities Flier you'll receive within the first two weeks of school. Fill out the form and return it to school by the deadline.
- Watch for requests for help throughout the year from your teacher's room parent, your child's teacher, and from PTA members and event chairs. Not only do "many hands make for light work," but you'll get to meet other parents with similar interests in the process!
- The PTA coordinates a volunteer fair early in the school year to help prospective volunteers learn about the many volunteer-led programs and activities offered at Murdock. PTA also hosts a "virtual" volunteer fair online (available 24/7) so that you can sign up to help when your schedule allows.
- If you have a specific talent or skill you'd like to share, please contact your child's teacher, the principal, or the PTA president, or use the talent/skill online form (here).
Levels of Involvement for Every Schedule or Skill Set!
Enhance students' learning experiences:
Every day, students benefit from one or more PTA programs "powered" by parent and community volunteers. The PTA Programs link describes these programs and who to contact if you'd like to learn more, cover a volunteer shift, or help with a task.
Volunteer in the classroom:
- Complete this volunteer application and return it to the school office to receive a volunteer badge.
- Contact your child's teacher to find out how you can help.
Provide leadership by chairing a PTA event or serving on a PTA committee:
Murdock PTA relies on volunteer leadership to coordinate the array of programs and activities sponsored by the PTA. If you enjoy planning and organizing, we would love to help you put those talents to work at Murdock. PTA provides on-the-job training and mentoring, too! To get started, go to the Who to Contact page for PTA committee/team contact information. We're working on uploading job descriptions for the various leadership positions, too. (STAY TUNED)
Serve as a Room Parent or Contact Person:
If you are interested in serving as room parent, please contact the Principal or the PTA Room Parent Coordinator. Room parents work with teachers to coordinate volunteers for classroom activities. Room parents also work with the teacher to coordinate the items needed for the grade-level end of year party. Room parents help communicate PTA and school information to the parents in their classroom to help all parents feel connected. Room parents work with the students to help them show, in a heart-felt way, their appreciation for their teacher during Staff/Teacher Appreciation in May. Room parents should have a desire to work with a diverse group of people and recognize and respect confidentiality issues.
Serve as a PTA officer:
Officers are elected each spring and can serve a maximum of two consecutive years in any one office. A nominating committee is formed in January to identify potential candidates and present a slate of officers at the April PTA General Association Meeting. Talk to a current officer to learn more about the duties of that office or help with one of the activities that officer oversees.
Volunteer Hours Are Tracked:
Every minute counts! We track volunteer hours every year so that we can use this data when writing grants. California PTA collects this data to preserve PTA's tax exempt status and to inform the state legislature about the important role volunteers play in the schools.
Every time you sign in as a Volunteer using the computer in the school office, your hours are tracked. If you volunteer at home (projects, phone calls, etc.), please let us know how many minutes or hours you worked! You can submit the information using this online form.
